This was originally written when only cats ruled my household. The dogs requested I update it to include their viewpoint as well. In a comfortable relationship between people and animals, there are rules. Here are the basic rules to maintain a happy and healthy relationship.

The most important rules for people are:

  1. Protect the animal from all harm
  2. Provide fresh water in a clean bowl daily
  3. Feed good quality food, designed for the specific type of animal, in the appropriate amount
  4. Keep all toilet facilities immaculate – every day
  5. Give the animal love, attention and playtime daily

Daily stroking helps you learn the feel of each cat’s coat. As you stroke your cat, notice how their fur feels. It should feel clean, soft, pliable and sleek. Changes in the texture of your cat’s fur can be from a change in their diet. If you have not changed their food, other causes need to considered.

Fur that feels dry or “woody” is an early warning of dehydration and requires an immediate trip to the veterinarian for help.

Fur that feels oily could mean the cat is not able to groom themselves properly either due to illness or physical limitations. It means the cat needs help to keep their coat healthy.
